Single-family home WALDEN: Introverted Architecture Beneath the Gabled Roof
Walden represents an architecture of calm, clarity, and conscious living. The house reinterprets the archetypal gabled roof house and combines a familiar form with contemporary architectural materiality. This approach creates a refined example of modern residential architecture rooted in timeless spatial principles.
Mass meets lightness
The base of the house is defined by a robust brick façade. The clinker gives the building material depth, durability, and a grounded presence within the surrounding landscape. In contrast to the darker metal shell above, a subtle dialogue emerges between mass and lightness, between solid base and floating roof volume.
Privacy and Openness
The architecture follows a clear organization of the spatial program. On the ground floor, the more private rooms such as bedrooms, bathroom, and home office create a protected living environment. Above, the upper level opens into the communal living space, establishing a quiet transition from private retreat to shared living.
With a gross floor area of 309 m², Walden develops a timeless, elegant, and compact contemporary house. The combination of clinker façade, metal cladding, and carefully controlled natural light creates a calm yet powerful architectural presence within the landscape.

Light shapes the space
The upper floor is wrapped in a precise metal façade, allowing the roof volume to appear as a clear and sculptural architectural figure. The carport is seamlessly integrated into this volume, forming a functional extension of the architecture and reinforcing the clarity of the overall composition. Inside, the roof structure defines the living atmosphere. A sequence of generous roof windows guides natural daylight deep into the interior, creating a bright and atmospheric open living space. Beneath these openings sits the kitchen with a breakfast area, a central place of everyday life shaped by the changing light of the sky. The spacious interior combines living, dining, and cooking into one continuous open plan living area with strong spatial character.
